postGame: Canaries @ Saints (Game Two)

By Jeremy Kreisberg

The First Place St. Paul Saints (2-0) defeated the First Half Champion Sioux Falls Canaries (0-2) by the score of 3 to 0.

…the canaries have been shut out three times this year, with two coming courtesy of the st. paul saints…

  • First and foremost, my sincerest congratulations go out to Mitch Wylie.   Wylie is one of the good guys in this business and has been by far the most stand-up guy to me in my first job in baseball.  Wylie picked up his first win since returning from labrum surgery which sidelined him for the 2007 season after posting a 2.96 ERA in AAA Norfolk in 2006.  Wylie has taken the role of pitching coach in stride and has quickly become one of the most reliable starters for the Saints
  • Wylie’s night finished with the following totals: 6.0 IP, 0 R, 5 H, 3 BB, 3 K
  • Wylie was simply matching zeroes with Ben Moore up until the Saints half of the fifth inning, when the Saints finally got to Ben Moore.  Heath Keel singled leading off, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Steve Butler, and moved to third as Ryan Priddy walked and Josh Womack hit into the 8-4 FC (Kennard Bibbs deeked out Priddy and myself on a pop up into shallow center) putting runners on at the corners with two outs
  • Tony Mansolino then came up and delivered RBI #4 as a St. Paul Saint with a sharply hit single past TIm Hutting to score Keel and give the Saints a 1-0 lead
  • Tim Brown then walked, loading the bases for Pichi Balet, who continues to simply crush the baseball, as he delivered a two-run single to right field to open up a 3-0 lead
  • The Saints ‘pen was perfect tonight, with Craig Molldrem providing two innings of relief and Tony Pierce picking up his ninth save with two strikeouts in the ninth
  • The Saints are now a perfect 2-0 in the second half, as the Saints have reversed seemingly every trend that was persisting towards the end of the first half — hey, even Ben Moore is mortal, as he is now 2-1 against the Saints in his last three appearances, with all three of them coming against Mitch Wylie
  • The Saints will look to keep this two-game winning streak rolling tomorrow night — same place, same time — with Justin Lord pitching against Ryan Ford as the Saints go for the sweep against the Sioux Falls Canaries

…talk to ya then…
